What is an Electric Brake Controller?
Do I Need An Electric Brake Controller? If you are new to towing or have purchased a new trailer, you may need an Electric Brake Controller. Electric brake controllers are mounted inside the cab of the tow vehicle. This device works in sequence with the brake pedal of your tow vehicle. As the brake pedal is pushed, an electric current will be sent to your trailer brakes engaging them to help you stop. The quicker your tow vehicle stops the more energy or voltage is sent from the controller to the trailer brakes. This will help stop you and your tow vehicle quicker and with more control. Not all trailers have electric brakes installed. All trailers of any sort must have either a SURGE BRAKE (drum brake system) or ELECTRIC BRAKING SYSTEM installed that have a Gross Trailer Weight of 1980 lbs. or more. Different brake controllers are available for different applications. Tandem axle, light or heavy-duty models are available. Analogue or digital control models, to finesse your stopping for fragile cargo are available as well. Visit www.tekonsha.com for more information on this topic. |
